The Grill, at The Vivanta by Taj, is an impressive sight. Set by the poolside, its calm and serenity is embracing, offering an easy and sumptuous escape from that hustle and bustle of city life.
As one enters the opulent Vivanta building one sees cascading waterfalls on the walls both inside and on the outside and a dazzling chandelier. The brilliance and the soothing ambience here all vouch for the fact that the Taj group always stays true to its promise of offering the best.
The Vivanta promises ‘The thrill of the grill like never before’ and keeping in mind this claim, I walked onto the second floor for dinner at their newly opened restaurant The Grill. It’s an impressive sight. With an elegant poolside, its calm and serenity is embracing, an easy escape from that hustle and bustle of city life.

I probably could not have chosen a better evening to have this experience as the weather which was hot and sultry the whole of the morning, changed to a breezy and pleasant one. I took the best possible seat near the poolside, and let the water mist fan blow the cool moisture-laden air to me. I had not recovered from this welcome than the chef came to greet me at the table. As we discussed and dissected the menu, it was time for the chef to prove his gourmet supremacy, and for me to sharpen my food-tasting skills.
The menu is an eclectic selection of masterful recipes from around the world. Seeing the assortment of delicacies and the range of cuisines on offer, I decided my pick for the evening. First came the red wine, soon followed by a medium done steak with an assortment of vegetables and mustard-flavoured jus. Soft and tender, the steak, glazed with the jus seemed to dance on my palette. Occasionally broken by the taste of wine, the evening seemed just perfect.
As I savoured the ambience and the crystal clear pool waters, it was time for dessert — the lemongrass flavoured Crème Brule. A beautiful, fragrant, therapeutic dessert which is hard to capture in words. Just simple subtle flavours, combining elegantly. One spoon of this masterpiece, and the world and all its worries will be forgotten. Ah, and to come back to the real world, the dessert was glazed to perfection, it just melted in my mouth. It was tough to keep myself away from it. For a minute, I did wish for all the attending staff to vanish for me to be able to lick off the bowl, leaving no trace of the Brule whatsoever, but I was forced by the demands of etiquette.
If the dessert does not sound tempting enough, then I am sure what follows will. Also on their menu is an assortment of spiced prawns, Shashlik, Rotisserie and Brochettes. For those who dig sea food, their menu is quite impressive. Not to forget salads with shavings of parmesan, baked potatoes and their barbeque sauces, among many others.
My only gripe was that I could not savour more. But from the things we had, The Grill is a combination of splendid, simple dishes with efficient, friendly service in a pleasant setting.
