El Panecillo, Quito
In the capital city of Quito is a volcanic hill, from the top of which you will get to see a spectacular view of the city. El Panecillo means the little Bread Loaf, and is home to the famous statue of La Virgen de Quito. The significance of the hill dates back to the Incas before the Spanish invasion. The hill was a site of sun worship, which later was used by the Spanish to construct a fortress to have a bird’s-eye view of what is going on below. On a clear day, you could get lucky enough to see the Cotopaxi — the highest volcanic mountain in the world!
Cotopaxi
It may not have been active since 1904, however, the charm and thrill of going up the summit remains nonetheless. Cotopaxi is the second highest mountain peak in Ecuador, and is considered the perfect place for walking, trekking or mountaineering. It last erupted in the year 1940, so may be you could be the one lucky enough to see it blow its top again. A great reason to come back home to boast about your adventure with your friends isn’t it? That is, if you are not at the edge of the volcano when the eruption takes place!
Quilotoa
This crater lake is a must see for scenic lovers — formed in the center of the Andes mountains, the secret lake is an art work of mother nature to be admired. Coloured in a beautiful cobalt blue shade, the lake is a perfect contrast to the mountains around. Can you go down to the lake? Of course! The climb though is steep and takes time. But then, what possibly could be a hindrance to an enthusiastic traveler? Don’t forget to cover yourself well, as it could get really cold and windy. Warm clothes, sunglasses and loads of enthusiasm — you are good to go!
Darwin Island
How is it justified if you come to the great land of Darwin and not pay homage to the man? Land visits may not be allowed on this island, but go there if scuba diving is on your mind. Abundant with a variety of marine species, and considered the best place on earth to go diving is good enough reason don’t you think? Don’t miss the famous stone arch formation known as the Darwin’s Arch, and the Darwin Mocking birds when you go there please!
